D.I.Y Matte Nail Varnish - 3 Ways

Matte nails are everywhere we look right now, and I'm loving the matte look from, blushes to lips.. and of course nails!

In Boots the other day I noticed how expensive Matte top coats are and I literally couldn't believe my eyes! Me being one who is on a budget (#student problems), I started to research and experiment DIY ways of turning any nail varnishes matte and honestly couldn't believe the results.

1. STEAM - This is my personal favourite way of turning your nails matte. Its incredibly simple and will cost you nothing.

What you will need:

- Pan
- Water
- Nail Varnish Of Your Choice

Method:

Simply put your pan on the gas and bring to the boil. As the water becomes fully boiled, with your WET nails place over the pan (not too close that you burn yourself) and let the steam work its magic.

2. BABY POWDER - An inexpensive way in which you can control HOW matte your nails will look.

What you will need:

- A Jar Lid Or Surface You Dont Mind Getting Dirty
- Nail Varnish
- Baby Powder

Method:

Pour a small amount of nail varnish onto your surface and on the other side, pour a little pile of baby powder. With your brush, add small amounts of baby powder at a time, so that it becomes a thick consistency but not too thick. I would say one part baby powder to two part nail varnish.

3. CORNFLOUR - Another way of controlling HOW matte your nails become but an easier method.

What you will need:

- A Jar Lid Or Surface You Dont Mind Getting Dirty
- Nail Varnish
- Cornflour

Method:

Work in the same way as you did with your baby powder, but with cornflour you dont need to watch measurements or be more careful. You can simply mix half nail varnish with half cornflour and you're good to go!

And VOILA!

Here's a before and after (using the steam method):

Now theres no need to waste so much money on pricey top coats for cute nails!

Red Carpet Nails

As we watch that beautiful Spring weather slip through our fingertips, I've found myself using any excuse to stay indoors!

Which lets face it, means Shopping, Shopping, Shopping, oh and maybe a bit of..

SHOPPING.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who has this problem - but seen as I have a little bit of time on my hands this week, I'm on the hunt for new nail colours to experiment with some nail art.

It didn't take me long to find the amazing 'Nail Girls London' website and I was almost drooling..

High Gloss, Ethical Beauty, 'Fashion on nails' and Long lasting colour..

Want to know more?..

Many weeks ago I was interning at a fashion PR company which I have to say was one of the BEST experiences of my life. During one of the press days, we had new and upcoming Nail brand 'Nail Girls London' there to offer free manicures to guests.

I couldn't resist having a cheeky look at their collection and I was honestly IN LOVE. I refused to go without trying out these nail colours.

The manicurist explained to me that the colours were going to be available online and in salons very soon, along with talking me through a bit about the company.

A long story cut short, here are the basics:

- All nail varnishes are CHEMICAL FREE. - This is music to my ears as your nails will be in beautiful condition without compromising on colour quality.
- Against all animal testing &Vegan Friendly - Enough said.. I'm all for animal friendly beauty!
- The packaging is completely recyclable - So we'll be looking cute AND helping the environment.. Hello perfection.
- Nail care and up-to-date colours are the sole priority of the brand - Inspired by seasonal fashion collections and creating the must-have colours means you will be looking amazing and keeping your nails in tip- top condition!

Here is a snap of my mani:

I opted for White #1 Snow White (Very Kardashian-esque)

Also, I noticed on the official Instagram page that Sienna Miller was wearing Beige #3 on her fingers and Blue #5 on her toes at the BAFTAs!

Just when I thought I was smitten by Shellacs, I've now discovered this!

Style Stealer #1 - Rihanna

After seeing this picture of Rihanna looking stunning in Mary Katrantzou and Tom Ford, I just had to take on the challenge of recreating this outfit on a budget. As she is head to toe in designer, the outfit may be beautiful, but your bank account wont be if you want this exact look. Yes ladies this outfit is plus size friendly.

Using a Givenchy, Look-a-like t-shirt, the vibrant pattern keeps the attention on the upper part of the body, which is exactly what Rihanna is doing here. The statement colours draw attention and add that pop of interest. Being a mans tee, it can be worn in various sizes depending on your shape, opt for a size larger for a more oversized relaxed fit.

The chunky necklace is from Asos and the gold colour adds an edge which compliments the outfit on a whole, it doesn't take away from the top but is needed for those final touches.

I teamed this with these black fringe shorts, also from Asos, for a mixture of textures and Rihanna is wearing something almost identical in this picture. Another thing I love about this piece is that they run up to a size 18 which means YES ladies, this outfit is plus size friendly.

And finally for those detailed Gladiator Sandals from New Look. The strapping creates a similar effect to the Tom Fords Rihanna is wearing above, however hers look more of an armour effect. So the New Look ones, create a more subtle and versatile version which is summer friendly and would look ideal with this!

5 Make-Up Facts You May Not Know..

I'm SO obsessed with all things make-up and beauty that I sometimes (embarrassingly) take it to the point of becoming a bit of a geek.

I read loads of books, attend tonnes of make-up classes and practice endlessly. I always feel there is something new to learn, and I would LOVE to freelance as a make-up artist once I graduate (amongst other things).

I read an article yesterday, where incredibly influential make-up artists had collectively stated the 10 facts that you may not know about make-up which honestly shocked me! So, today I decided to compile 5 of my personal favourites which I have picked up over the years.

1. The Stippling Brush Is The Most Universal Brush For The Face - The Stippling brush can be used for foundation, powder, blush, bronzer, highlighting and all the blending in-between which is amazing!  Dont forget to spot clean between each product and one of these is all you need.

2. Lip Plumpers Work By Stimulating An Allergic Reaction On Your Lips - That tingling sensation you feel when using a lip plumper is a mild allergic reaction which causes those products to be effective. They will work differently for everyone and the tolerance of peoples skin is dependant on how well they work.

3. Between 67- 100% Of Make-Up Testers Are Infested With Bacteria Including E. Coli - Statistics show that Make-up testers are SWARMING with bacteria. While some companies say they change their     testers everyday, bacteria builds up so easily, so avoid putting these anywhere on your face and wash any product off almost instantly if you can.

4. Cosmetics With Shimmer That Contain 'PearlEssence' Are Made From  Fish Scales - The most common ingredient to create shimmer or a pearly sheen to products is through the use of ground fish scales. Although this had fast become an expensive procedure for cosmetic company's and has now led to the demand for a more cost - friendly alternative.

5. Clinique, MAC, Smashbox, Origins & Bobbi Brown Are Owned By Estee Lauder - Having been building an empire of cosmetics since the early 90's, Estee Lauder has been buying out companies such as MAC (in 1994) for years, along with creating their own lines, such as Clinique. Leading them to become one of the ultimate companies for skincare, make-up, fragrance and hair care.

Do you have any interesting make-up facts?

Chillin' Out Maxin', Relaxin' All Cool

Jacket - Asos
Skirt - Asos
Top - Gift (Similar HERE)
Shoes - Primark
Sunglasses - Primark
Bag - Gift (Similar HERE)
Necklace - Ebay

I saw this jacket and I knew I had to make an outfit with it, to channel my inner 90's spirit. Yes I'm a 90's baby!!!! (notice the fresh prince reference in the title?! ;)) I bought 1 size larger for an slightly baggier fit, as I think this the way to go with its shape. Crop tops are a MASSIVE trend right now and I knew my trustee item - the skater skirt would be a perfect match. I opted for a muted black colour, as I wanted the jacket to do all the talking. I teamed it with a statement necklace, because they brighten up the dullest outfits, and add to the most extravagant ones.

Not into skater skirts? The look is so versatile, and can be styled for different occasions. Try a midi or a pencil skirt to keep it sophisticated but without losing the vibe.
